Protect the North Fork

The valley of the North Fork of the Flathead River, west of Glacier National Park, is a special place, rich with wildlife, endowed with clean air and clean water, and blessed with a solitude and civility that are the envy of more "civilized" communities. We wish that the North Fork remain so. Therefore, we the undersigned oppose the paving of the ten miles of the North Fork Road, from the end of the pavement north to the Camas Road, because we believe that:

    • Paving would encourage traffic and urban and human encroachment adjacent to this important World Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, to the profound detriment of all God's creatures, and in particular to grizzly bears and gray wolves.
    • Paving would provide thieves and mischief-makers with a swift and silent access to the North Fork's remote homes, needlessly subjecting residents and property to an increased risk of crime and vandalism.
    • Paving would encourage speeding and reckless driving on this winding and hilly road, leading to more accidents, and, in all likelihood, more deaths.

We ask only for a safe, well maintained, gravel road with prudent speed limits, not a 70-mile-per-hour speedway from Columbia Falls to Glacier National Park.
