Three state officials plan to meet next week with negotiators from British Columbia to develop a plan for managing coal projects or other natural-resources work north of Glacier National Park.
"We think there's a lot of potential to work together on this," said Hal Harper, chief policy adviser to Gov. Brian Schweitzer.
The Montana group is headed by Mike Volesky, Schweitzer's natural-resources policy adviser. Also traveling to Victoria, British Columbia, for Monday's meeting are Art Compton, an administrator in the state Department of Environmental Quality, and Rich Moy, water management chief in the state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.
"We want to start a process for dealing with these things as they come up, not necessarily after they come up," Volesky said.
